I am sure that you have heard about the many benefits of “going green” in regards to the monetary and environmental sides of things. However, very rarely do people discuss the benefit to your health that environmentally conscious living can have. It is important that this planet is good and clean, but it helps if you have more individualized incentives.
By reducing the amount of fossil fuels that you use and turning to alternative forms of energy, you can make your heart healthier, make your cardiovascular system healthier, and lower your risk of contracting an infectious disease. When there is less pollution and such in the air, your heart is able to work better. It is not affected by the various particulates that are found in that kind of air. Also, less pollution means that asthma and such is less likely to affect you. You are also less likely to develop some sort of respiratory related cancer, such as lung cancer. According to some scientists, global warming facilitates the spread of infectious diseases. When you stop polluting, then the effects of global warming are not as prevalent and the spread of diseases is minimized. It is important that if you start doing it, that you have people work on it with you because just one person is not enough to completely stop global warming, but everything has to start somewhere.
There are some obvious health benefits by going green when you look at transportation. One of the most popular and environmentally friendly modes of transport is the bike. When you bike, you build muscle and become healthier. The benefits of this green method are weight loss, improved cardiovascular health, stronger muscles, and a more secure immune system. Another way to save the planet (if biking is not your cup of tea) is by carpooling. When you have less cars on the road, there are less cars to pollute the air. While this may not be a perfect system, it is a start at least. If you live close enough to work, the store, or school then you could even walk there. Walking is ideal and it allows you some much needed down time and personal relaxation.
Another great way to stay healthy while staying environmentally friendly is through buying locally grown food. When you go to a farmers market or another similar venue, you are buying fruits and vegetables that are not covered in the commercial pesticides and chemicals. These are real foods that may have a spot or two, but they will not pollute your body like generic fruits and veggies will. Organically and locally grown foods are the very best for your health.
